MULTIMEDIA MADE TO WEAR

Green fashion defies traditional boundaries for recycling, design and wearable arts. And these days haute couture, ready-to-wear and vintage designs alike are embracing unique aesthetics in the recycling, reusing and redefining of otherwise waste materials.

Over the next few weeks Haberdashery will be blogging about a myriad of fashion-related products and services derived of recycled, virtually obsolete multimedia. In five weekly segments we will focus on the repurposing of outdated MUSIC, FILM, PHOTOGRAPHY and TECHNOLOGY.

MULTIMEDIA MADE TO WEAR, PART I: Runway Rock N Roll

Rock music and the greater music industry have always impacted trends and fashions, from tight leather pants to rocker hair to ripped tees. But these days, music comes alive in repurposed fashions utilizing outdated multimedia – like cassette tapes – and waste music equipment – like guitar strings – to create hot new looks and accessories.

Check out the phenomenal work of Alyce Santoro, conceptual artist and activist who launched her Sonic Fabric line a few years ago from her Brooklyn enclave (today she lives minimally in West Texas and works at a solar-powered sewing machine!). Sonic Fabric utilizes 50% recycled tape from old cassette tapes and 50% polyester thread to create messenger bags, purses, ties and even dresses. Or purchase the fabric by the yard and create your own styles. (Visit her online shop.)

And how cool are these colorful bangles crafted from used guitar strings?? Rhode Island-based socially conscious Wear Your Music makes bracelet from strings and silver, sold singly or in sets of five, six and seven count. At a higher price point are bracelets custom made from the guitar strings used by an artist of your choice (over 200 celebrity musicians to choose from).

Haberdashery is getting in on the action too! We manufacture eco-friendly wooden drumstick buttons made by Passafire's own Nick Kubley, used and abused on tour until fully worn from wear. Ashley and crew then chop, sand, drill and glaze the wood to make unique, collectible, sustainable, awesome buttons. Only $12/dozen. Color customizable!! Visit our Etsy site for more buttons we sell.
