30 Stores in 2 Days: Haberdashery Shops NYC

In her preparation for her upcoming show at Charleston Fashion Week, Haberdashery owner/designer Ashley Newsome recently traveled to the Big Apple on a buying trip. Her mission: find sustainable/renewable/eco-friendly fabrics and trim thatshe could use in her Fashion Week line. The hitch: she had to source continuous fabric so that she could replenish her supply for orders from the show.
True to form, Ashley hit the ground running. In her short stint in Manhattan, she visited 30 stores in 2 days.
She literally ran in circles around the Garment District for 7 hours a day. The score: of those 30 stores, only 7 were wholesale distributors. 5 of those 7 were viable eco-sources, but only 3 of those 5 had minimums that a small start-up like Haberdashery could meet.

Ashley returned to Savannah with 3 solid pieces of wool and some elegant recycled polyester faux fur, plus a few random one-off pieces she could re-source if need be, and some appropriate velvet and silk ribbon for trim. But that was not before she caught up with boyfriend Nick Kubley, drummer for the Savannah-based band Passafire, who played Gramercy Theater while she was there.
What's next for Haberdashery on the road to Charleston? Ashley has acquired all the fabric for the show and shipped many to Noon Design Dyehouse in LA for all-natural, wholesale dyeing by Jane Palmer. Her colors: plum, eggplant, orchid, and dusty pink. Now it's on to preliminaries, and the ever-tedious process of recording materials and operations for her team of assistants.
